Pattern Shop was founded by Rachel, who had the vision to bring together lots of talented designers and pattern cutters. They work together to create an innovative sewing pattern brand made up of a variety of ranges for different styles and occasions, offering a large selection to suit a variety of individuals.
Rachel has BA Honours Degree In Fashion Design and Fashion Business from the University of East London. During her fashion career, she has worked as a designer, supplying high street fashion brands such as Topshop, Debenhams, New Look and ASOS. She has also worked for Madame Tussauds wardrobe department, designing and dressing the celebrity wax models and has assisted Vivienne Westwood herself, fulfilling the roles including pattern cutting and fitting at the Vivienne Westwood head office.
Rachel has since moved on in her career and focused on channelling what she has learnt from her experience in the fashion industry and transferred these skills to create something she has a greater passion for. She has a passion for the environment and recognises the damage and dangers that the fast fashion industry brings. She is also the founder of E.D.E.N Magazine (Environmental Designs with Ethical Notions) and Lady Natural (An organic underwear brand). She supports the sew-it-yourself community and aims to contribute to an eco-friendly movement of bringing more of this culture back, worldwide. Further to this, the element of individually is an important part of the Pattern Shop mission, of which Rachel and all of the PS designers feel passionate about. She promotes the belief that fashion is a way of expressing yourself and your individuality. What better way to do this than to make your own made to measure, unique clothing in your own choice fabric, with our ready to sew patterns.
Pattern Shop offers a large selection of gorgeous PDF sewing patterns in a variety of ranges and stunning styles. Our Environmental and Ethical Effort
A big part of Pattern Shop is our commitment to the environment and ethics. The business model is designed to minimise any negative impact to the environment and promote a more ethical and eco-friendly option to fashion.
The fast fashion industry is massively damaging to our environment. Clothing production makes up 10% of humanity's carbon emissions, dries up water sources, and pollutes rivers and streams. It is the second largest consumer of water worldwide, and takes 2,000 gallons of water to make just one pair of jeans. Clothing production has doubled in the last 20 years and consumption is predicted to rise by 63% from 62 million tons today to 102 million tons in 2030. Not only are people buying more clothes, but they are also keeping them for half as long. Due to fast fashion companies such as Zara producing 24 collections in one year, consumers are constantly buying new clothes to keep up with trends. 85% of textiles end up in landfill each year, that means that 1 garage truck full of textiles is burned or dumped in landfill every second.
The fast fashion industry today is heavily reliant on cheap labour and oversea's manufacturing. These factories often have very poor working conditions and the workers are underpaid. Over 50% of workers within the fashion industry are not paid the minimum wage in countries like India and the Philippines. In Pakistan’s garment sector, 87% of women are paid less than the minimum wage.
The beauty of making your own clothes from Pattern Shop is that you are not fuelling this fast fashion machine. Pattern Shop consumers do not tend to follow trends, instead our customers have individuality. This means that a constant mass of new unneeded trendy collections are not being produced to end up in landfill, like the vicious fast fashion cycle. With Pattern Shop, you only make the items of clothing you need, there will never be a mass over production of waste. Using our customisation tools and services, you are able to make yourself the perfect unique item to your perfect fit, these are items you will want to save and not send off to landfill. We strongly advise our customers to use good quality fabrics to ensure your clothing is long lasting. We believe that your Pattern Shop garments are your own personal work of art and should be cherished, loved and worn with pride. We like to call it sustainable sewing. And of course, the best way to know for sure who made your clothes and under what conditions... is to make them yourself!
We only offer PDF patterns as part as our service, again, to ensure overproduction and waste products do not occur. Each individual pattern is only printed when required by our customers. We realise that our patterns do require paper to be printed, and there is sometimes spacey areas on the print out that lead to a certain amount of paper waste. We strongly urge all of our consumers to recycle this excess paper. Pattern Shop also donates to 'One Tree Planted' and offers customers the chance to donate 72p with every purchase, which pays for one more tree to be planted, with the aim of giving more to the environment than what you are taking for your Pattern Shop print out.
